The world's largest cooling installation: The natural draft cooling towers built by Balcke for the Golpa-Zschornewitz power plant near Leipzig had a cooling capacity of 43,000 cubic meters per hour. |

Leon T. Mart and Chester E. Smiley, manufacturers' representatives for cooling tower products, form the Power Plant Equipment Company in Kansas City, Missouri. |
1924 | |

Mart and Smiley combine elements of their last names to form the “Marley” trade name. The first Marley spray pond is installed. |
1925 | |
The Marley spray nozzle is patented. Mart designed the right-angle type nozzle to produce an effective spray at pressures much lower than other nozzles being sold. | |

Balcke continues to introduce innovations in shapes and materials as cooling towers evolve into more efficient designs. |
1926-7 | |
The first Marley representatives are appointed to expand the company's coverage. Craun-Liebing in Cleveland and Midwest Machinery in St. Louis continue to represent SPX Cooling Technologies, Inc. today. | |
1928 | |
By amicable agreement, Mart and Smiley dissolve Power Plant Equipment Company (PPE). Smiley forms the Smiley Equipment Company, which retains all sales franchises for other manufacturers and becomes the Marley representative in the Kansas City territory. Mart takes over the physical assets and patents of PPE as well as the rights to Marley products. He incorporates as “The Marley Company.” | |
1929 | |

Balcke develops international operations. Branch offices in Prague, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Milan are opened. |

Marley enters the industrial cooling tower market with its first atmospheric deck tower. |
