Marley MD - Cooling Towers
Overview
For decades, SPX Cooling Technologies has been a leading producer of counterflow cooling towers for large industrial installations. Today we’re bringing the technology down to size… with the new Marley MD Cooling Tower.
The Marley MD is a packaged counterflow cooling tower. Available as both Factory Assembled or Field Erected, the Marley MD has a smaller footprint while providing comparable capacity as a crossflow cooling tower. This induced-draft counterflow tower is ideal for applications with restricted site conditions and/or low energy requirements.

Counterflow towers have different footprints from crossflow towers and offer layout alternatives. Where space is limited or otherwise restricted, the counterflow’s smaller footprint can be a perfect fit. In addition to taking up less site space, counterflow towers may have a lower installed weight. Plus, piping costs can be reduced since a single inlet is usually standard.
The counterflow’s tight louvers prevent sunlight from hitting the collection basin reducing algae growth. Counterflow towers also offer easy access from all tower sides. The wet surface is enclosed for winter operation and protection from environmental elements. It has all of this and a corrosion-resistant spray system, too.
Low Energy Consumption
Induced draft counterflow equipment minimizes the energy consumption by providing a lower fan energy requirement than centrifugal fan counterflow units. And being remarkably energy efficient, it doesn’t waste a single kilowatt.
Superior Water Management
To reduce “splash-out” typically found in competitive counterflow designs, Marley introduces an industry first: a triple-pass inlet louver that conserves water and improves winter operation.
Smaller Footprint
Induced draft counterflow design requires less plan area than crossflow towers. And typically because the tower’s size results in less steel used, its reduced weight requires less support structure.
Long Life Construction
Rugged G600 heavy mill galvanized steel (G235 in the Americas) is standard with 300 series stainless steel as an optional upgrade to part or the entire tower structure. Marley ISO certified plants assure quality factory-assembly.
Low-Noise
The Marley MD comes standard with our low-noise fan, suitable for most noise-sensitive situations.
Unmatched Reliability
Heavy-duty construction, high-performance design, and our five-year mechanical warranty ensure consistent, fully rated cooling over a wide range of flow and temperature requirements.
Ease of maintenance
Marley has worked hard to address the maintenance difficulties long associated with counterflow towers. Our MD tower provides larger access doors and other features that simplify maintenance.
What makes the Marley counterflow tower better?
- Triple-pass inlet louvers and drift eliminator for superior splash-out protection and water conservation

Air2Air is a fully integrated system that operates more reliably than coil-based systems. By using a series of PVC heat exhanger packs in the tower plenum, ambient air condenses much of the moisture before it exits the tower.
The system can be installed on a single cell, or an entire tower, depending on the required water return rate. It is also available both for existing and new cooling towers.
Challenges
Water scarcity is a problem. Many industries face serious operating constraints from a lack of water resources. These industries lose millions in revenue in lost production and suffer from increasing water costs each year. Many power plants are finding it more difficult to get approval for plant expansions, solely because of a lack of water.
Solutions
SPX scientists and engineers have developed a simple and effective system for recovering much of the water that is evaporated in a standard cooling tower. Recovered water can be returned directly to the tower basin, or even piped away as a pure water stream for boiler make-up or other plant uses.
Use of this system can allow greater plant production, reduce water consumption and treatment cost, and even replace more costly means of generating pure water. By combining the Air2Air technology with a hybrid, split steam system, steam-plant cooling systems can be optimized to provide the most efficient use of available water resources possible.
Save Water and Save Money
With environmental concerns high than ever, SPX’s Air2Air technology can help you accomplish something concrete and significant — and something that benefits everyone.
Consider this: One large cooling tower fan cell equipped with an Air2Air system can save nearly 270 million 8-ounce glasses of water every year — enough to quench the thirst of every adult in the United States. And that’s only one cell, for only one year.
Annual Water Savings — USA
| 12% | 18% | 21% | 24% | 27% | 30% |
| 345,000 | 515,000 | 600,000 | 685,000 | 770,000 | 865,000 |
Benefits include:
- Simpler hydraulics for simpler operation
- Fewer moving parts, requiring less maintenance
- No freezing concerns
- Visible plume is greatly reduced along with the headaches associated with conventional coil systems and external plume abatement systems
- Less need for costly pure water make-up
- Less chemical treatment
- High-quality condensate available for other uses
- Colder water, less power usage, and lower capital costs compared to ACC Dry Cooling

Hybrid Circular Tower - Wet-Dry Hybrid Cooling
Overview
Circular hybrid cooling towers are the ideal solution for cooling of higher water flow rates with reduced visible plume.
Features
Available:
worldwide
Related Information:
SPX Cooling Technologies has extensive experience designing and constructing circular hybrid cooling towers. Efficient wet cooling cold water temperatures are achieved with reduced visible plume similar to dry cooling systems. The special advantages of a circular cooling tower is the elimination of recirculation effects, the reduction of operating costs plus the combination of hybrid cooling with higher water flow rates.
Principle of Circular Hybrid Cooling Towers
A hybrid cooling tower functions in principle like a wet cooling tower. An additional dry section installed in the upper part of the cooling tower reduces visible plume by heating wet air coming from the rain zone.
The fans for the wet section are arranged around the circumference of the cooling tower shell at ground level. At the dry section the fans are located above the wet level in front of the heat exchangers. The hyperbolic shell achieves a natural draft effect which supports the fans of both sections. Therefore the power consumption is reduced.
Elimination of the Recirculation Effects
For cell-type cooling towers the recirculation effect needs to be considered with regard to the thermal performance as well as to the plume-free operation. As the plume of the circular cooling tower is conducted by the higher shell, the recirculation effect is eliminated.
Reduction of Operating Costs
As the natural draft effect supports the fans the power consumption is reduced. Considerably lower operating costs are achieved especially by the application of two-speed motors.
Salt Water Application
The higher rise of the plume results in a wider dispersion. That means for seawater application the salt particles are also better distributed in the air and the resulting salt concentration on the ground is considerably reduced. SPX has special experience with the component design and the selection of materials suitable for saltwater application.
Space Requirements
The recirculation effect need not to be taken into account for circular cooling towers therefore the space requirements are reduced. Also the circular shape is more favorable in comparison to cooling tower cells located in defined distances.
