Plume from a cooling tower can pose several issues. It may affect visibility and safety as well as public perception.
Plume abatement is the process of removing this visible plume.
ClearSky is a fully integrated system that operates more reliably than coil-based systems. By using a series of PVC heat exchanger modules in the tower plenum, ambient air condenses much of the moisture before it exits the tower thereby reducing the plume.
Why is plume abatement important?
Aesthetics / Neighbor Relations
Even though the cooling tower plume is made up of water vapor, a community may perceive it as unwanted or smoke-related. This may affect the use of nearby land or decrease property values.
Safety
Community concerns regarding visibility can be removed by significantly reducing visible plume.
Retrofit
The ClearSky Plume Abatement System can be added to existing cooling towers in many cases, making plume abatement even more economical.
Permitting
Permitting can be a long and costly process. Eliminating the visible plume may enhance a smooth permitting process.

Related Information:
Counterflow towers have different footprints from crossflow towers and offer layout alternatives. Where space is limited or otherwise restricted, the counterflow’s smaller footprint can be a perfect fit. In addition to taking up less site space, counterflow towers may have a lower installed weight. Plus, piping costs can be reduced since a single inlet is usually standard.
The counterflow’s tight louvers prevent sunlight from hitting the collection basin reducing algae growth. Counterflow towers also offer easy access from all tower sides. The wet surface is enclosed for winter operation and protection from environmental elements. It has all of this and a corrosion-resistant spray system, too.
Low Energy Consumption
Induced draft counterflow equipment minimizes the energy consumption by providing a lower fan energy requirement than centrifugal fan counterflow units. And being remarkably energy efficient, it doesn’t waste a single kilowatt.
Superior Water Management
To reduce “splash-out” typically found in competitive counterflow designs, Marley introduces an industry first: a triple-pass inlet louver that conserves water and improves winter operation.
Smaller Footprint
Induced draft counterflow design requires less plan area than crossflow towers. And typically because the tower’s size results in less steel used, its reduced weight requires less support structure.
Long Life Construction
Rugged G600 heavy mill galvanized steel (G235 in the Americas) is standard with 300 series stainless steel as an optional upgrade to part or the entire tower structure. Marley ISO certified plants assure quality factory-assembly.
Low-Noise

Air2Air is a fully integrated system that operates more reliably than coil-based systems. By using a series of PVC heat exhanger packs in the tower plenum, ambient air condenses much of the moisture before it exits the tower.
The system can be installed on a single cell, or an entire tower, depending on the required water return rate. It is also available both for existing and new cooling towers.
Challenges
Water scarcity is a problem. Many industries face serious operating constraints from a lack of water resources. These industries lose millions in revenue in lost production and suffer from increasing water costs each year. Many power plants are finding it more difficult to get approval for plant expansions, solely because of a lack of water.
Solutions
SPX scientists and engineers have developed a simple and effective system for recovering much of the water that is evaporated in a standard cooling tower. Recovered water can be returned directly to the tower basin, or even piped away as a pure water stream for boiler make-up or other plant uses.
Use of this system can allow greater plant production, reduce water consumption and treatment cost, and even replace more costly means of generating pure water. By combining the Air2Air technology with a hybrid, split steam system, steam-plant cooling systems can be optimized to provide the most efficient use of available water resources possible.
Save Water and Save Money
With environmental concerns high than ever, SPX’s Air2Air technology can help you accomplish something concrete and significant — and something that benefits everyone.
Consider this: One large cooling tower fan cell equipped with an Air2Air system can save nearly 270 million 8-ounce glasses of water every year — enough to quench the thirst of every adult in the United States. And that’s only one cell, for only one year.
Annual Water Savings — USA
Water Savings In gallons saved per day for a typical 500 MW combined cycle powerplant.
| 12% | 18% | 21% | 24% | 27% | 30% |
| 345,000 | 515,000 | 600,000 | 685,000 | 770,000 | 865,000 |
Benefits include:
- Simpler hydraulics for simpler operation
- Fewer moving parts, requiring less maintenance
- No freezing concerns
- Visible plume is greatly reduced along with the headaches associated with conventional coil systems and external plume abatement systems
- Less need for costly pure water make-up
- Less chemical treatment

Related Information:
SPX Cooling Technologies has extensive experience designing and constructing circular hybrid cooling towers. Efficient wet cooling cold water temperatures are achieved with reduced visible plume similar to dry cooling systems. The special advantages of a circular cooling tower is the elimination of recirculation effects, the reduction of operating costs plus the combination of hybrid cooling with higher water flow rates.
Principle of Circular Hybrid Cooling Towers
A hybrid cooling tower functions in principle like a wet cooling tower. An additional dry section installed in the upper part of the cooling tower reduces visible plume by heating wet air coming from the rain zone.
The fans for the wet section are arranged around the circumference of the cooling tower shell at ground level. At the dry section the fans are located above the wet level in front of the heat exchangers. The hyperbolic shell achieves a natural draft effect which supports the fans of both sections. Therefore the power consumption is reduced.
Elimination of the Recirculation Effects
For cell-type cooling towers the recirculation effect needs to be considered with regard to the thermal performance as well as to the plume-free operation. As the plume of the circular cooling tower is conducted by the higher shell, the recirculation effect is eliminated.
Reduction of Operating Costs
As the natural draft effect supports the fans the power consumption is reduced. Considerably lower operating costs are achieved especially by the application of two-speed motors.
Salt Water Application
The higher rise of the plume results in a wider dispersion. That means for seawater application the salt particles are also better distributed in the air and the resulting salt concentration on the ground is considerably reduced. SPX has special experience with the component design and the selection of materials suitable for saltwater application.
Space Requirements
The recirculation effect need not to be taken into account for circular cooling towers therefore the space requirements are reduced. Also the circular shape is more favorable in comparison to cooling tower cells located in defined distances.

Each tower is custom designed for flow rates up to 200.000 m/h / 900,000 GPM.
Minimized Operating Costs
Natural draft cooling towers are particularly attractive as a cost-saving solution for larger power stations and industrial plants requiring greater quantities of cooling water. As this type of cooling tower operates without fans, the substantial amount of electric power otherwise required for large cooling tower systems is not needed. The required cooling air is conveyed through the tower by natural draft thus neither fan nor fan power is required.
International Experience of SPX Cooling Technologies
Each natural draft cooling tower is created by a team involving over 200 specialists, including mathematicians, chemical, civil and mechanical engineers, with expertise in soil mechanics, concrete design, hydraulics, heat transfer, materials and machine design.
Treated Exhaust Gas Discharge via Natural Draft Towers
Apart from the advantages of savings in operating costs the natural draft cooling tower can also be applied for the discharge of the treated exhaust gas. That means that neither chimney nor flue gas reheating are required.

Reduced power consumption, favorable space requirements, minimized recirculation effects, optimum operational behavior for salt water application and the aesthetic look are only some advantages of round cooling towers with forced draft fans.
Principle of Circular Cooling Towers with Forecd Draft Fans
The hyperbolic shell achieves a natural draft effect which supports the fans arranged around the circumference of the cooling tower shell. Therefore the power consumption of the fans is reduced. The cooling tower is separated in different sections, which can be isolated, to ensure operation with lower water quantities. Also maintenance activities can be accomplished in shut-off sections while the rest of the cooling tower is still in operation.
Reduction of Operating Costs
As the natural draft effect supports the fans the power consumption is reduced. Considerably lower operating costs are achieved especially by the application of two-speed motors.
Elimination of the Recirculation Effects
The plume is conducted by the higher shell, therefore the recirculation effect is eliminated. In contrary to the cell-type cooling towers where the risk of the plume falling on the ground and being drawn into the cooling tower must be considered.
Salt Water Application
The higher rise of the plume results in a wider dispersion. That means for seawater application the salt particles are also better distributed in the air and the resulting salt concentration on the ground is considerably reduced.
Space Requirements
The recirculation effect needs not to be taken into account for circular cooling towers therefore the space requirements are reduced. Also the circular shape is more favorable in comparison to cooling tower rows located in defined distances.

System
The process water enters the spray tree at top of unit, is sprayed down onto the heat exchanger surface or fill, giving up heat to the counterflowing air before returning to the system from the sump pan. Moist air does not enter the fan assembly, resulting in longer life and fewer service problems. Recold solves this problem with the wetted surface downstream of the fan assembly.
Hydro Spray Nozzles
Hydrospray Nozzles are made of non-ferrous material, sized and spaced for optimum wetting of decking. The even distribution of spray across the decking material is extremely important in evaporative equipment.
Accessibility
Recold Cooling Towers are designed for maximum accessibility for inspection and cleaning. Recold patented access doors on both sides of unit provide ample access to spray nozzles, decking, eliminators, bleeds and sump pan for service and maintenance. Recold access doors provide a complete air and water tight seal without gaskets or fasteners, are “quick opening”.
Blowers
A single slow speed forward curve blower is used for optimum efficiency and minimum noise. Recold standardized on slow speed forward curve fans when tests indicated that propeller fans were too noisy for most commercial air conditioning systems. The lower cost of propeller fans can seldom be justified where noise is undesirable. Each blower is balanced to eliminate unit vibration on Recold’s high precision electronic balancing equipment. Large blowers are made from galvanized steel and subject to careful quality control throughout. Fan shafts are coated to prevent corrosion. The blower drives are selected at 150% of rated B.H.P.
Bearings are self-aligning ball-bearing type, with external lubricating fittings and selected for 200,000 hour average bearing life. Rugged, OSHA approved, belt guard and screen are provided for protection. Motor is mounted on adjustable base.
Drift Eliminators
Eliminators are constructed of PVC assembled in removable, easy to handle sections. A three break design allows three changes in air flow. The use of durable plastic eliminates the corrosion problems associated with galvanized eliminators.
Integrated Assembly
Recold Cooling Towers are completely assembled at the factor and shipped as a unit.
Fill
High efficiency is accomplished by using a PVC fill design that provides the maximum of wetted surface within allowable airside pressure drops. Fill units are conveniently sized for easy removal. Cooling tower fill shall be high efficiency, of self-extinguishing Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), a minimum of 40 mils thick. It shall have a flame spread rating of 25 per ASTM standard E-84 and be impervious to rot, decay, fungus or biological attack.
Testing
All Recold Cooling Towers are tested under the close supervision of the Quality Control Department before being released for shipment. Fans are run and spray systems operated to assure quiet, balanced operation without leaks, water carryover or vibration. Nozzles are checked for proper distribution.
Capacity Controls
All Recold units are provided with a special damper in the discharge section of the blower scroll. This damper is standard equipment which is locked in place to act as a flow control vane.
If automatic control is required, the damper is unlocked and the damper rod is connected to a damper motor. This work should be factory installed and adjusted under good inspection supervision to assure proper operation.
The damper is controlled by a thermostat in the sump water. The water temperature is maintained above a predetermined level. As the water temperature drops the damper closes - in extreme weather closing completely. The fan is stopped by a limit switch on the controller. As water temperature increases the fan starts and the damper opens.

This new arrangement saves you fan horsepower by improving airflow through the tower.
Simplified Maintance
The Aquatower is a maintenance delight! You’ll appreciate the way the Aquatower simplifies maintenance. No hidden spray systems, tiny nozzles, or enclosed basins here! You can easily replace and align V-belts from outside the tower.
All primary components of the Aquatower are open to view. You can easily remove any debris from the upper basin or nozzles while the tower is in operation.
Heavy mill galvanizing on all steel components prevents base metal corrosion. Optional stainless steel and fiberglass models enhance the Aquatower with proven corrosion resistance.
Ready for Your Job
Above all, the Aquatower is readily available. You won’t have to wait around or accept second best when you need a cooling tower. We maintain an impressive stock of completed towers at our own plants. A growing number of local distributors can draw from that stock.

Integrated Parts
You’ll enjoy single source responsibility and reliability because we design and manufacture virtually all major cooling tower components.
All Marley components are designed and selected to be a part of an integrated system. For example, the spray pattern from nozzles and the pressure drop through drift eliminators both affect a fill’s heat transfer capacity. So, we include that impact in our thermal analysis.
Drift eliminators must be effective at the air velocities where fill is most efficient. So, we’ve carefully designed both components to work together efficiently.
Our total system approach assures that all the parts work together to provide you the greatest total performance. And because we design specifically for cooling towers, all our components will provide many years of service with minimal maintenance.
Warranty and Service
Every Aquatower cooling tower carries a full one-year warranty. The Aquatower you buy from us will work on your job or we’ll make it right. Your warranty includes thermal performance and every component of the tower. The SPX Cooling Technologies warranty is your assurance of performance — for a full year.
